Line Removal

Line removal may be appropriate in certain situations and plays a critical role in maintaining road safety, visibility and clarity.

Removing outdated or incorrect markings helps prevent driver confusion and ensures that road users can clearly understand the correct lanes, directions and traffic controls.

This allows new lines to adhere more effectively to the surface, resulting in stronger, longer-lasting markings that maintain their visibility and performance over time. Proper line removal therefore helps ensure that updated road layouts are clear, compliant and durable, supporting safer roads for all users.

We use two different techniques for this:

  • Thermic Lance
  • Grindlazor

See below for details on these techniques, please note our team will advise on the appropriate choice for your project.

Name

Thermic Lance

This method uses a heated blow torch to remove the painted line, our operatives work with care to ensure safety to themselves, the client and the public. The lance is a steel tube packed with iron rods. Intense heat will melt off the lines and remove them from the surface.

    Grindlazer

A GrindLazer is a specialist machine used to remove existing road markings by mechanically grinding away paint and thermoplastic from the road surface. Using a high-speed rotating cutting drum fitted with durable cutters, the machine effectively removes markings with precision while minimising damage to the surrounding surface.

At Wilson & Scott, this is a technique we regularly use when old or incorrect markings need to be safely and efficiently removed before new road layouts or line markings are installed. The process is ideal for highways, car parks and other trafficked areas where accuracy and surface protection are essential.
