The RAC states that there can be a 44% increase in wet braking distance between car tyres having a tread depth of 1.6mm instead of the recommended 3mm.

Tyre tread depth and tyre safety checks | RAC Drive

Although the legal limit for cars is 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre, the RAC article indicates that most tyre and safety experts recommend a minimum of 3mm. This is because reduced tread depth lessens the ability of tyres to disperse water which increases braking distances and raises the risk of aquaplaning and loss of grip.

So, to reduce the risk of collisions remember “Do it at 3 not 1.6”.
